Repair Booth

For those wearing prosthetic arms or legs, have you traveled to a conference in the past and had something break on you? If so, not to worry at Skills for Life 6 because we will have a repair booth in Houston, courtesy of Fillauer and Holmes Prosthetic Center! This means if you have a screw come loose (literally, not figuratively), a frayed cable, something breaks, a grommet falls out or a common piece mysteriously disappears from your arms (or legs), we have you covered at Skills for Life! We have seen our amazing healthcare professionals working in the side rooms or back corners since 2008 to help with impromptu fixes to make sure you can still function while you are away from home and your prosthetists. We just want to make sure everyone knows this awesome booth will be available throughout the 3.5 days while you are in Houston! Be sure to thank our Fillauer and HPC friends if you see them around at SFL 6!

Disclaimer: This is not a prosthetic evaluation clinic, it is only for small repairs or quick fixes.

HOTEL UPDATE - ALERNATE HOTELS

September 15, 2022

The Skills for Life 6 reduced rate reservation date has passed, but please don’t worry!  You can book at several nearby awesome options and ALL are less than a half a mile away!  Most, if not all, of these hotels have shuttle services within a mile radius and Uber/Lyft are everywhere in this area. You can also still book rooms at the SFL 6 hotel, just not at our reduced conference rate.  For our scholarship recipients, who have not booked hotel rooms yet, we will need to coordinate with the hotel you end up making reservations with.  If anyone has made a reservation and no longer needs it, please make sure to email SSJRehab@gmail.com so we can transfer your reservation to someone else.

To see the nearby options, please click here or on the PDF button in this section. Each blue underlined hotel name below includes a hyperlink to that hotel for reservations.

Amputee Coalition Certified Peer Visitor (CPV) Training at SFL 6!

Message from Amputee Coalition:

At the heart of the Amputee Coalition’s mission is our peer support programs. Our goal is to make sure that no one goes through this journey alone. We believe that support comes in many forms and can make an incredible difference in recovery and rehabilitation. The Amputee Coalition’s Certified Peer Visitors (CPVs) are trained volunteers who provide information and support for individuals about to undergo an amputation or who currently have limb loss/difference. We are excited to partner with Enhancing Skills for Life to bring a hybrid CPV training to Houston during the Skills for Life 6: Bilateral Upper Limb Loss Workshop. Our hybrid training requires CPV Candidates complete a 3.5-hour training session via Zoom with a Certified Peer Visitor Trainer and then you can complete your in-person 2.5-hour skills assessment during the Skills for Life Workshop training session. If you're interested in becoming a CPV during the Skills for Life Workshop, we invite you to review the CPV criteria and complete an application by clicking this link or the images in this section. You will be asked to authorize a background check and submit two letters of recommendation at the end of the application. Please note, this will be a small training session, with only 10 seats available. *Cutoff date for registration is September 16, 2022.

Airport Transportation & Houston Flights

AIRPORT TO HOTEL TRANSPORTATION

The hotel does not provide transportation to/from either airport (IAH or HOU) so you will need to arrange that separately through a taxi service, SuperShuttle, Uber, Lyft or renting a car.

For our wheelchair users, Houston Metro will be offering a service between the airports and JW Marriott. You will need to pre-register for this service, please contact us to get registered. Be prepared to provide flight #, airline, and arrival/departure times.

FLIGHTS TO HOUSTON

We are now less than a year away so it may be a good idea to start looking into airfare. Escape Houston is a great way to find cheap flights to Houston so we recommend following them on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, joining their Telegram channel or signing up for their newsletters. Even though the notifications may discuss traveling from Houston to another destination, the reverse itinerary between cities is typically the same fare.

Duty of Care & COVID

SFL 6 & COVID

We are requesting either proof of vaccination or a negative test (rapid or pcr) within 72 hours of arrival to SFL 6. Please keep in mind, the US no longer requires a negative test to enter the country and the CDC continues to recommend NIOSH approved masks for large indoor gatherings.

Enhancing Skills for Life is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all SKILLS FOR LIFE 6 participants, vendors, and staff. We are diligently monitoring the CDC Small and Large Gatherings | CDC, federal, state, and local health authorities’ regulations around COVID-19. We will update our Duty of Care statement on a regular basis to reflect changes to mandates. We take this pandemic seriously, and we are working hard to provide the safest environment possible. Please fill out this online screening questionnaire, print out and bring with you to speed up check in process.

At this time we are not mandating masks, however we are strongly recommending masking at SFL 6.
